The links below are to archives of Usenet postings related to the creation of the newsgroup humanities.philosophy.objectivism. For information on how these links are organized, see the Introduction.
The formal process for creating a the newsgroup was preceeded by discussion in the existing alt.philosophy.objectivism newsgroup. This discussion covered various ideas for a new newsgroup and how it might work. I've included a good bit of this discussion just to show how much (or how little) some people's views changed over the course of the process.

After these initial discussions, an official proposal for a new group was issued, initiating the next phase of the discussion.
Unfortunately, the archive is missing some interesting posts from this discussion, including some controversial posts that spawned spin-off discussions. Although the spin-offs are more or less irrelevant (stuff about property rights, the nature of Usenet, etc.), I would have liked to include the original posts that prompted them. Unfortunately, I can't. There were also a number of threads complaining about the quality of a.p.o, many of which are not preserved in the archive. The fact that they existed is shown by archived posts that quote them or refer to them. Of course, griping about an existing newsgroup doesn't necessarily lead to the creation of a new one, but some of them did mention the possiblity of starting a new newsgroup. More significantly, I can't find the start of a thread called "Time to regulate APO," which included the idea of starting a moderated newsgroup. The threading offered in the archive for that discussion is so hopelessly broken that I can't do much with it, so I haven't included it here.
Absent this earlier material, I've started with Jason Kuznicki's first draft proposal, which came at a time when Deja had started to become a little more consistent about archiving posts from a.p.o. Despite the limitations of the archives, the posts that have been preserved should give a good idea of the types of issues that came up in the inital discussion.
